A Comparison of Approaches for Building Rich
Internet Apps with Ajax
Higher Education and Conference Center, Room 130
8:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
Marty Hall
Presentation:
"Ajax" refers to the set of techniques that use JavaScript to
asynchronously update individual portions of Web pages, and
is now widely used in diverse types of Web applications.
However, Ajax development is difficult, and there are several
fundamentally different strategies to building Ajaxified
Web applications. This talk will survey the three most important
of these approaches:
- Using an Ajax-enabled JavaScript
library such as jQuery, prototype, Scriptaculous, Dojo,
or Ext/JS
- Using a Web framework such as
JSF 2.0 or Struts 2 that has integrated Ajax support.
- Using the Google Web Toolkit
(GWT) to build "pure Java" Ajax applications.
The talk will compare and contrast these
three approaches, discussing
the types of applications that fit best for each option.
Presenter:
Marty Hall is the author of six popular Java EE books, including
Core
Servlets and JavaServer Pages, the all-time worldwide bestselling
servlet and JSP book. Marty is president of coreservlets.com,
a training and consulting company focusing on server-side
Java technology and Rich Internet Apps with Ajax. In addition
to long Java development and consulting experience, Marty
has an extensive background in teaching and training, having
given training courses on J2EE and Ajax topics in Japan,
Canada, Australia, the Philippines, Mexico, Puerto Rico,
India, and dozens of US venues. Marty is also adjunct faculty
in the Johns Hopkins University part-time graduate program
in Computer Science, where he directs the Java and Web-related
concentration areas.
